What is Petroleum Resin?
Petroleum resin, also known as hydrocarbon resin (HCR), is a type of thermoplastic resin derived from C5 and C9 fractions of the petroleum cracking process. Produced through a series of processes including pretreatment, polymerization, and distillation, petroleum resin is a oligomer with a low molecular weight range of 300 to 3000.
It is characterized by its low acid value, excellent solubility with other polymers, good viscosity adjustment, thermal stability, water resistance, ethanol resistance, and chemical resistance. Typically, petroleum resin is not used alone but rather as a tackifier, promoter, regulator, modifier, or in combination with other resins, solvents and polymers.
Petroleum resin finds widespread applications in various industries due to its advantageous properties. In the rubber and tire industry, it enhances viscosity, reinforcement, softening, and ant-slip. In the adhesive industry, it improves adhesion, acid and alkali resistance, and water resistance of solvent-based adhesives and pressure-sensitive tapes.
